Events & Activities

SSVAD offers art residency opportunities to artists from other states and countries. Studio space and accommodations are provided with minimum charges (details on enquiry). Artists can avail the facilities of the centre and work with the artistic ambience of the place. As it is located in Santiniketan, which has a large community of artists associated with Visva Bharati, the University founded by the great poet and philosopher, Rabindranath Tagore- it has a rich cultural history to compliment ones creativity. The natural surroundings of Santiniketan, the tribal villages and the famous Bauls- the roving minstrels of Bengal can be a very enriching sensory experience for  creative individuals.

The main motto of SSVAD is to create space for multi-disciplinary art activities, which has been happening from the inception of the art centre and continuing.  Art residencies, exhibitions, seminars, workshops, performances that happened are summarized below.

December 31, 2023
Blanket Distribution

Charubasana, Kolkata, and SSVAD jointly distributed 38 blankets to the elderly poor villagers of Bonerpukurdanga on December 31st at 10:30 a.m. The programme was held at SSVAD premises. Representatives from Charubasana and members of the SSVAD were present on this occasion.

13th Anniversary Celebration

The SSVAD celebrated its 13th anniversary on December 4, 2023. The Emeritus Professor Mohammad Rafiqun Nabi of Dhaka University and the great Indian theatre personality Dr. Ratan Thyiam from Manipur have been felicitated on the occasion. Dr. Asok Das has graced the occasion as a chief guest. The Birbhum Blossom Theatre of Santiniketan performed the drama “Mitten Bahawak Daran” in Santali. The programme was attended by many visitors from in and around Santiniketan.

Painting Workshop

A workshop was organised from December 1 to 3 at SSVAD, where artists from across the border participated. Prof. Rafiqun Nabi, Prof. Afzal Hossain, from Dhaka University, Bangladesh, and a few members’ artists of the SSVAD participated in the workshop.

October 6, 2023
A drawing workshop with the Japanese artist Mishako Shine

A drawing workshop was organised in the presence of Japanese artist Mishako Shine on October 6, 2023. 15 child artists from the nearby village of Bonerpukurdanga have participated in the workshop. The invited Japanese artist has taught the participants some new drawing techniques and patterns. The event was successfully completed.

Painting Workshop of SSVAD

SSVAD has organised a mixed-media workshop, including painting and ceramics, from September 21 and 24, 2023. Shri Jogen Chowdhury has participated in the workshop along with other member artists of SSVAD. Two junior artists from SSVAD Studio also took part in the workshop.

Workshop with child artist of Bonerpukur danga:

SSVAD has organised a workshop with the child artist of Bonerpukurdange on August 27, 2023. The participating artists created a hand scroll of paintings in the workshop. The workshop was coordinated by Mahjabin Imam Majumdar and Banatannwi Dasmahapatra. The event was quite interesting to the child artists. They have enjoyed and learned from the workshop.

A conversation between two art critics, Prof. R. Sivakumar and Prof. Soumik Nandy majumdar

On the occasion of the exhibition 'Scenes of Santiniketan and Benodebehari's Handscrolls', KCC, in collaboration with Gallery Rasa and in association with SSVAD, presents Landscape and Self-expression in Benodebehari's Early Work: A Conversation between R. Siva Kumar and Soumik Nandy Majumdar on July 11, 2023, at 6 p.m. at the SSVAD new building. A good number of artists and art lovers attended the event.

An Exhibition on Benodbehari Mukherjee’s Art works:

SSVAD has celebrated the 162nd birth anniversary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore on May 9, 2023. Few members have sung the Tagore songs on this occasion. The society has invited some of its friends and followers to participate in this programme.

SSVAD has celebrated the 162nd birth anniversary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore on May 9, 2023. Few members have sung the Tagore songs on this occasion. The society has invited some of its friends and followers to participate in this programme.

A lecture on Japanese Garden and Tea House

A society member, Mr. Milon Dutta, is a professional architect. He gave a presentation along with his counterpart, Japanese architect Kengo Sato, on the Jananese garden and tea house on April 23 at the society premises. The presentation was attended by many artists and art lovers.

Artist Residency Programme with Serendip Art Banglaore

SSVAD organised an artist-in-residence programme with Serendip Art Banglaore from January 15 to February 28, 2023. The time frame of the programme was 45 days. Three artists have participated in the programme, worked at SSVAD studios, and exhibited their works at the SSVAD Gallery. SSVAD has provided them with enough space for a comfortable stay, food, and the necessary infrastructure. At the end of the programme, the artists have presented their ideology, shared their experience practising art at SSVAD studios, and interacted with SSVAD studio participants, art faculties, etc. They enjoyed the ambiance of the art society and its surroundings. They visited art works in nearby places, Kala-Bhavan, and the university areas. Overall, the programme was successfully held. A few photographs are depicted here.

Internatinal Artist Residency programme

An artist, Guy Seika from France, joined the SSVAD artist-in-residence programme from January to March, a three-month time slot allotted to him by SSVAD as per the artist’s application. SSVAd provided him with comfortable accommodations with the necessary infrastructure and space for work. He has presented a wonderful open studio from February 21st until February 26th, 2023, and a slide presentation on February 26, 2023. Many Artists and art lovers attended the session. See photos

Art Fair 2023

SSVAD organised the 2nd Art Fair as an occasion of the spring festival of organisation on March 5 and 6, 2023. Many artists, art lovers, friends of society, and others visited the fair. see photos

A group theatre show at SSVAD

On March 12, a theatre group from Kolkata presented a theatre show at SSVAD premises. The concept and script were written by Smt. Ishita Mukherjee, founder of Ushneek, Kolkata. The show was attended by many theatre lovers, SSVAD friends, and members of the society, apart from invited guests such as renowned actors Shri Subhasish Mukhopadhyay, Shri Debshankar Halder, etc. see photos

An exhibition named “Scenes from Santiniketan & Benodebehari’s Handscrolls” was held from July 10 to 27, 2023, at SSVAD Gallery with the collaboration of the Kolkata Centre for Creativity and Gallery Rasa Kolkata. Exhibition of African American Art: “negritude”

This year, Kala Thank you for viewing the National Alliance of Artists from Historical Black Colleges and Universities’ traveling exhibition from HBCU’s. The organization was founded in 1999 to bring Art and Art Education to the forefront, provide expressive dialogue, opportunities to exhibit and educate the populous through the visual arts. The organization has approximately 90 members representing over 50 black colleges and universities. All artists in the exhibit “negritude” are professional artists and educators who were/or are affiliated with Historical Black Colleges and Universities in the USA. Read more…

PRINTMAKING (ETCHING) CERAMICS TEXTILE SCULPTURE PAINTING

Santiniketan Society of Visual Art & Design is providing studios in short term basis for the final year students of Kala Bhavana, as a special package in view of the current pandemic situation. The studios will be available with a nominal charge and by strictly maintaining COVID protocols. Interested students may apply in the Google form available on demand. Send an application at ssvadart@gmail.com and fill up the details of the form. SSVAD will have the rights to select or reject any application on the basis of their studio capacity. Art Festival: “Shilpi Milon Utsav”

This year, Kala Bhavana is celebrating hundred years of its foundation and to commemorate the occasion, SSVAD is organising a special artists’ festival, named “Shilpi Milan Utsav”. We are inviting artists from all over India to be a part of this festival. The Festival starts on 2nd August and will end on 7th August 2019. Read more..

Group Exhibition of the Society members at Kala-Kriti Art Gallery, Hyderabad

SSVAD and Kala-Kriti Art Gallery, Hyderabad jointly organized a Group Exhibition of the Members of SSVAD at Kala-Kriti Art Gallery, Hyderabad for a month from 18 January 2018 to 18 February 2018. 25 Artist members of the SSVAD participated in the show. Number of local artists and art lovers visited the Show. A beautiful catalogue was designed by Shri Rishi Barua, one of the artist members of the Society.

International Artist Residency Programme

SSVAD organized an International Artist Residency Programme from 24th March to 23rd April 2018 at the Society premises. Two Artists from France, Fred Kleinberg and Laur Meyrieux participated in the Programme. Laur Meyrieux is a designer and Fred Kleinberg is a painter. On the last day of the programme both of them gave individual presentation on their work and shared their experiences. Artists’ members of the SSVAD very much appreciated their work.

A Film Show

Documentary Film maker Mr. Anindya Dutta screened three of his films at SSVAD with interactive session with the audience on 29th June 2018. Students from Kala-Bhavana and local residents along with SSVAD members attended the show.

Workshop with Moner Milon, Kolkata

One day workshop of “Moner Milon, a cultural organization of Kolkata was organized by SSVAD and Moner Milon jointly at the Centre’s premises on 9th March 2018. Artists from Kolkata and Santiniketan participated in the workshop.

SSVAD Film Screening for the month of January 2017

As a part of the cultural activity, SSVAD screened a film ‘Siddheswari’ movie by Mani Kaul on 13th January 2017. A large number of people attended the screening.

An Etching workshop was organized by SSVAD from 15th to 20th January 2017 where a well known artist Mr. Shahid Kabir was participated from Bangladesh and Shri Jogen Chowdhury and member artist of the SSVAD participated in the workshop.

International Art Workshop

An International Art Workshop was organized by SSVAD from 20th to 23rd January 2017 at the premises. Where well known painters Mr. Tawatchai Somkong, Panya Vijinthansarn, Alongkorn Lauwatthana were from Thailand and Mr. Shahid Kabir and Mr. Nisar Hossain were from Bangladesh participated in the workshop. On 21st January 2017 all the invited artists demonstrated their art works by slide show presentation with interactive discussion.

SSVAD Film Screening for the month of February 2017

A Film was screened ‘KAPILA’ on the Kutiattyam Dancer Kapila Venu by Sanju Surendran at the Society on 19th Fabruary 2017. The event was followed by an interactive session with the director on Skype.

Young Santiniketan Artists’ Exhibition 2017

5th Young Santiniketan Artists’ Exhibition 2017 organized from 17th November to 30th November 2017. Total 68 numbers of art works were selected from 94 artists. Among them 5 artists were awarded with Cash Price of Rs. 10000/ each with a certificate of excellence and 25 artists were appreciated with a certificate of appreciation. The Awards were distributed on 19th November 2017 during the 7th Anniversary of the Society.

A joint Collaborative Art Camp with The Eyewithin

SSVAD and The Eyewithin jointly organized an Art Camp from 24th to 27th March 2017 where renowned artists from all over India participated. 13 numbers of Artists participated on the Camp, namely Akhilesh Verma, Chandra Bhattacharya, Farhad Husain, Jogen Chowdhury, Jayashree Chakraborty, Jayasri Burman, Justin Ponmany, Laxma Goud, Mithu Sen, Paresh Maity, Prajakta Potnis, Thota Vaikuntham and T.V. Santhosh. On 26th March SSVAD organized a presentation of the artists followed by an interactive session. A large number of junior artists and member artists of the SSVAD were attended the session.

SSVAD organized an interactive session named “A Route to Reveal Discourses in Contemporary Art Practice” where Prof. Jogen Chowdhury and Prof. R. Shivkumar replied all the queries related to the contemporary art practice to the M.F.A. students of Kala-Bhavana.

Ceramic Workshop jointly with Lumiarz India, Kolkata

SSVAD and Lumiarz India, Kolkata jointly organized a Ceramic Art Camp from 5th to 13th August in the SSAVD Premises. Member Artists of SSVAD and two Juinor Artists from Nagalanad and Bhutan participated in the Art Camp.

Clay Modelling Workshop with the Child Artists

SSVAD cultural committee organized a clay modeling workshop in the month of November at the Society premises.  Smt. Sheema Barua was the Mentor of the workshop. 12 Santhal Child Artists participated in the workshop from the nearby village Bonerpukurdanga. The workshop started on 2nd November and ended on 15th November 2017. The Child artists enjoyed the Workshop. The Art works created by the Santhal children were much appreciated by the members of SSVAD.

7th Anniversary Day Celebration

Santiniketan Society of Visual Art and Design celebrated its 7th Anniversary Day on 19th November 2017. On this auspicious occasion songs along with recitation were presented by the invited artists Smt. Indrani Bhattacharya and Shri Shankarlal Bhattacharya.  Two books were also released on this occasion written by Shri Shankarlal Bhattacharya, i) Pateswari ii) Vatsayan & Vrindavani.  Besides Santhal Children from the nearby village, Bonerpukurdanga presented beautiful group dance with traditional Santhali songs. During the Occasion the Society felicitated Prof. Sibaprasad Kar Choudhury for his contribution on Art.

Printmaking Workshop

From 6th to 10th January 2016 SSVAD organized a printmaking workshop. Some renowned artists from India and Bangladesh participated in this collaborative workshop named ‘Ganga Padma Collective’.  Sri Laxma Gaud, Sri Sanat Kar, Sri Jogen Chowdhury, and Sri V. Nagdas from India and Sri Sahid Kabir, Sri Manirul Islam Sri Rafiqun Nabi and Sri Abdul Barq Alvi from Bangladesh.

From 8th to 10th February 2016 Sarjan Art Gallery Baroda and SSVAD jointly organized an Art Camp. Shri K. G. Subramanyan, Sri Jogen Chowdhury, Sri Chandra Bhattacharya Smt. Jayashri Chakraborty and artist members of SSVAD took part in the Camp.

6th Anniversary Day Celebration

Santiniketan Society of Visual Art and Design celebrated its 6th Anniversary Day on 19th November 2016. On this auspicious occasion song and dance was presented by Santhal Children from the nearby village, Bonerpukurdanga and Esraj recital by Shri Abir Singh Khangura. On the same day an exhibition was opened at the Art Centre and the participant artists were the members of the society and studio workers of the society.

Among them 5 artists were awarded with Cash Price of Rs. 10000/ each with a certificate of excellence and 21 artists were appreciated with a certificate of appreciation.

On 6th to 7th October 2015 the Art Centre organized a candle light drawing workshop. The Participants were the Members artists of the Society.

5th Anniversary Day Celebration:

Santiniketan Society of Visual Art and Design celebrated its 5th Anniversary Day on 19th November 2015. This year the Centre felicitated eminent Art writer Shri Manasij Majumder and Artist Shri Partha Pratim Deb for their life time contribution to art and education.
